Soil’s role as a long-term carbon reservoir is increasingly being recognized even as agriculture and land use continue to reduce and degrade it, a trend that urgently needs to, and can, be reversed, according to a new European Commission report.

The UNCCD wants to see soil enhancement and conservation efforts, such as those using biochar, to be included in the UNFCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism along with afforestation and reforestation projects.

Foresting Degraded Land Could Meet Growing Global Energy Demand

Contrary to widely-held assumptions, growing global energy demand could be met sustainably and in a carbon neutral, possibly even carbon negative, way by afforesting land degraded and using lignocellulosic biomass to produce electrical power, liquid fuels and other chemicals. Doing so would have significant additional environmental and social, as well as economic, benefits, two German researchers assert.
