UN Kigali Amendment Boosts Global Environmental, Climate Change Prospects

National representatives to the UN Montreal Protocol took action to phase out production and use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) at a meeting in Kigali, Rwanda this past week. In addition to further reducing destruction of atmospheric ozone, the Kigali Agreement is expected to reduce projected mean global temperature rise 0.5 degrees Celsius over the course of the century.

EPA Approves Five Low-GWP Refrigerant Alternatives

With significantly lower GWPs than refrigerants currently in use, the approval of ethane, isobutane, propane, R441A and HFC-32 as refrigerants in a range of refrigeration and air-conditioning applications is expected to reduce the risks of climate change as well as depletion of the ozone layer.

EPA Proposes New Climate-Friendly Refrigerants

In accordance with Pres. Obama’s National Climate Change Action Plan, the EPA is proposing new refrigerants with lower global warming potential that also don’t harm the ozone layer.
