Two-thirds of Americans support regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, a majority support a carbon tax as a means of doing so.

75% of Americans Support Regulating CO2; 60% Support Carbon Tax

The following post is republished from my colleague Zach Shahan, site director for CleanTechnica.com. Zach explores the disconnect between the GOP “party line” on taking action to curb greenhouse gas emissions, clean energy development and what people actually want. Carbon in Thawing Northern Permafrost Double Previous Estimates

The amount of carbon frozen, stored and now thawing in northern permafrost is double previous estimates and double that contained in the atmosphere, heightening concerns that these regions will become major sources of carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

UN Launches Project to “Unlock Carbon Markets” for Farmers, Foresters, Conservationists

The UN and partners announced the launch of an international research project that aims to evaluate and assess the ability of soils and forest in nine developing countries to capture and store carbon, as well as provide a range of additional environmental, social and economic benefits. The project aims to open up nascent carbon markets to farmers, ranchers, foresters and conservationists around the world.

Global Temperatures, Sea Levels Rising Faster than Expected

Global temperatures and sea levels are rising faster than expected due to rising CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, according to the German weather service, prompting calls for more aggressive actions on the part of cities to adapt.

Soil Conservation Key to Carbon Sequestration

Soil’s role as a long-term carbon reservoir is increasingly being recognized even as agriculture and land use continue to reduce and degrade it, a trend that urgently needs to, and can, be reversed, according to a new European Commission report.

How Now Brown Cloud?

Massive brown clouds caused by burning fossil fuels, forests and fields are now fixtures over huge areas of Asia, the Middle East and southern Africa, altering weather patterns, climate and threatening health and agriculture, according to a UN report. An international response and more research is urgently needed, according to the lead researcher of a UNEP study.

EPA Gag Order: Put a Sock in It

The Environmental Protection Agency, in an email sent last month, has ordered their employees not to “respond to questions or make any statements” – from anyone. Including congressional investigators, reporters, or even the EPA Office of Inspector General. Whatever is going on in the EPA, it’s none of our damn business (not even the EPA’s oversight office). The emailed gag order…
