Enthusiasm at “Low Ebb” for COP17 Climate Conference in Durban

Scant sign was given last week st the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York that world leaders are focused on international climate change negotiations. With only three months before the COP17 climate conference in Durban, South Africa – where a decision must be made to either extent the Kyoto Protocol into a “second commitment period” or scrap it entirely – little mention of global …

CO2 is Just a Trace Gas, It Could Never Impact Climate – Right?

How can a trace element comprising barely 0.04 percent of the atmosphere make any difference in our climate? It has become something of a prime “scientific” point from certain political leaders and denier pundits, but most of us know, if we were paying any attention in high school, that without that trace gas, earth would be lifeless and covered in ice. The following video …

Warming Climate Brings Sea Level Rise, Land Loss and Marine Migrations to Europe’s Seas

Sea level rise

Europe's seas are changing at an unprecedented rate, much faster than climate scientists anticipated. Seawater temperatures have been rising around 10-times faster than average over the past 25 years, while wind speeds have also been increasing. The combination of rising sea levels and stronger winds has resulted in the loss of 15% of Europe's coasts, according to recently completed EU-sponsored marine research.

Science and Pernicious Ignorance of Climate Change Denial

Willful ignorance of the reality of climate change

It is nothing short of tragic that so many Americans continue to dismiss the scientific veracity of climate change. Deniers are not moved by the coherency of the research that weaves together the different points of measurement. The plethora of data includes higher global mean surface temperatures, melting glaciers, retreating sea ice, increasing water temperature, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and extreme weather. The …

Deep Ocean Argo Floats, New Approach Yield New Insights into Ocean Acidification

Thanks to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and a joint US-Canadian research team, it is now possible for marine scientists to use satellite data from five-foot-tall Argo floats that drift with deep ocean currents to remotely monitor ocean acidity (pH) and the total carbon dioxide (CO2) content of seawater to better understand changes in ocean chemistry.
