A massive effort to turn agricultural waste into biochar and bury it in soils is the only option left open if we’re to reduce atmospheric CO2 and mitigate climate change, according to prominent UK scientist James Lovelock. This as Earthscan prepares to publish the first interdisciplinary synthesis of biochar research and practice.

The UNCCD wants to see soil enhancement and conservation efforts, such as those using biochar, to be included in the UNFCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism along with afforestation and reforestation projects.
Some 230 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions can be avoided between now and 2050 – bringing atmospheric CO2 concentrations down 20 parts per million – if carbon capture and storage (CCS) development is pursued aggressively and put into use, according to Shell International’s Unconventional and Enhanced Oil Recovery team.
