International Day for Biological Diversity: A Day to Celebrate Wetlands, Marine and Coastal Biodiversity and Ecosystems

May 22 is the UN’s “International Day for Biological Diversity,” a day that various UN agencies are joining in celebrations and reaffirming their commitments to biodiversity conservation, protection and “wise use” efforts worldwide. Included is the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the only global environmental treaty focused on addressing challenges related to one particular ecosystem.

UN’s State Of The World’s Forests Reveals Deforestation Is Speeding Up

The United Nation’s latest report on the state of the world’s forests shows an alarming increase in the rate of deforestation. Much of this is due to a rise in palm oil plantations used to make biofuels. An economic alternative must be found to protect the world’s forests and the biodiversity and other vital environmental services these ecosystems provide.
