China Tops United States in Carbon Emissions

Topping out at 6.2 billions tons of carbon emissions, China overtook the Unites States’ 5.8 billion tons for 2006, according to the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

China is fast at work cranking out 550 new coal-fired power plants, bringing them online at the rate of 2 every week, but it is cement production that is the biggest emitter.

China is on the fast track toward large-scale industrialization and has a full 44% of the total global production of cement.

Overall, China’s carbon emissions increased 9% in 2006.
