The US: Missing in Action on Climate, Energy, and Science

COP 30 is underway in Belรฉm, Brazil, with a noticeable absence: the United States.ย

While Environmental Protection Agency chief Lee Zeldin seeks blood as he drives โ€œa dagger into the heart of the climate change religion,โ€ some have opined that an absent US delegation is a good thing. โ€œAnd that is just fine with those who see the Trump administrationโ€™s hostility toward anything related to climate change as a menace to international cooperation on global warming,โ€ writes Lisa Friedman in the New York Times.

Itโ€™s a Hoax Donjaโ€™ Know

The last thing an already flawed process needs is the open hostility of the Trump Administration to climate change. Itโ€™s a hoax. A delegation with a belligerent message indicting the entire exercise serves no purpose and hobbles any hope of progress. In so many ways, Donald Trump is the most anti-progress president in modern history, at least in my memory. I was born during the administration of Dwight Eisenhower.

Wind Mills Cause Cancer

Trump does his best to destroy one of the fastest-growing sectors in service to a bizarre culture war over renewable energy development. Solar and wind contribute the majority of new electrical energy-generating capacity. Advanced energy management technology, combined with solar cell efficiency and storage capacity, makes renewable energy the most economical and climate-sensitive source of energy.

Donald Trump is willing to cede an entire fast-growing industry to China.

Missing in action on two counts. Thereโ€™s so much more

So, while it is unfortunate that the US canโ€™t manage to assemble an entourage of malcontent negotiators to bully the rest of the world, perhaps it is best.

Let people at the sub-national level take the lead in global climate change negotiations. Only serious people need attend, and let the people of the Amazon be heard, much louder than anything Donald Trump has to say.
