When climate-fueled extreme weather hits a red state in the United States, it’s because nefarious liberals have masterminded an evil plot to harm the MAGA faithful. When the same thing happens in a blue state, the culprit is liberal incompetence. Pick one. Better yet, let’s pull our heads out of our butts and muster the human decency to respond appropriately when fellow citizens suffer.
That Trump, the MAGA right, and useful idiots like Elon Musk seem incapable of any empathy or critical thinking in the face of extreme weather incidents like the LA fires is why we’re all going to die. You can bet that if, by some freak accident—he gets hit in the head with a ketchup bottle, for instance—Trump suddenly changed his mind and said that global warming was real, you can bet all his sweaty, incurious, faux God-loving followers would run to the other side of the boat. “This is America!” they’d cry. “We have to save our country from climate change!”
Instead, as climate change becomes ever more real, causes record billions of dollars in damage, claims lives, and devastates communities, all these people can do is lie, misinform, and accuse in a desperate attempt to own the libs. In reality, it’s more like a circle-jerk reach-around as they screw themselves and the rest of the planet with them.
LA Fires and the Failed Response to Climate Change
The LA fires are the latest example of this nation’s abject failure to address the climate crisis, even as it unfolds in neighborhoods across the country. If it is not possible to see beyond ideological dogma for even a short time to help fellow citizens who are victims of extreme weather events, be it floods, hurricanes, searing heat, or unprecedented urban firestorms, then we are surely not capable of doing the hard work required to mitigate and adapt to climate change in any meaningful way.
Should there be a post-mortem to determine what went well and what didn’t in the response to the fires in LA? Of course. This is especially true given the uncharted climate territory we are now in. Calling Governor Newsom names or blaming the incident on the smelt (a bogus claim) is no help. It most certainly isn’t leadership. But it’s apparently what this hapless nation voted for.
The MAGA mindset lives in a tiny world. One that will get smaller and smaller as their mindless anger and war on The Other buries them alive.
The rest of us will resist.
