GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Anders Hellum-Alexander wraps-up and comments on the climate and environmental news headlines for the past week:
- Obama’s environmental, energy, and climate change agenda after reelection: Obama has been a strong supporter of renewable energy and the growth in the solar market will make it easy for Obama to legitimize his continued support of solar as a viable source of energy and a solution to global warming. And America might be finally ready to listen to the facts on climate change after Super Storm Sandy.
- Canada is the largest exporter of oil to the US – and now that Obama has been re-elected Canada is very interested in the president’s position on the Tar Sands Keystone Pipeline. There is a lot of industry confidence in the completion of the project, but there is a large environmental movement against the pipeline.
- Oil prices are going to stay high for the foreseeable future. Even if America follows through on increasing domestic production we will see no reduction in price from OPEC set prices.
- Oil companies in America have diversified into natural gas. They also spent millions trying to get rid of Obama in the 2012 election, despite the opposition, companies like ExxonMobil will find Obama’s “all of the above” approach quite supportive of their agenda.
- Ghana is looking to capitalize on its energy potential, and for once the energy source is not oil, but instead pure clean renewable energy.
- The UN is using Sandy as a wake up call about climate change. As tragic as it is apparently we need large-scale catastrophe before we take action on environmental issues.
