GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Anders Hellum-Alexander wraps-up the climate and environmental news headlines for the past week:
- Don’t let BP make you think that oil spills are rare accidents. Another oil spill in Michigan is ruining the land we live on.
- Oil companies are now rushing to develop machinery to stop a deep water oil spill in a few days. They should really just invest that money in developing sustainable energy sources.
- More on BP and its sloppy cleanup effort. This time they have decided to suddenly fire 10,000 cleanup workers.
- Massey Energy, a coal company that was recently made infamous because of a large explosion in a mine that killed 29 people, plans to remove a mountain top in West Virginia to access coal deposits. Many people oppose the plan and would rather see a field of wind turbines than just mounds of rubble.
- The internet seems immaterial, yet, it has a large carbon footprint due to all the machinery that keeps it going. Is the environmental impact worth the service of the internet? I certainly think so.
- An Australian group published a plan that could turn Australia carbon neutral by 2020. Humans are able, just not willing.
- MotherJones reports on environmentalist’s dissatisfaction with the government’s environmental efforts. We still need to acknowledge though that the environmental movement has not had this much governmental support since the 1970’s.
- A story from the CBC highlights the impact of invasive species in Canada. The first line of the article is, “Canada is in the midst of an alien invasion.”
