Rockers, Filmmakers, Writers Account for Their Arctic Experience

Jakobshavn GlacierFor those of you who didn’t know it yet; global warming is real. But you can even verify for yourself. If you are a celebrity or have plenty of cash, that is. Last month, a company called Cape Farewell took a boatload full of celebrities to the arctic. The crew included singers Jarvis Cocker, (Nova Scotia born) Feist, Robyn Hitchcock, Martha Wainwright, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vanessa Carlton (a thousand miles), Scotland’s KT Tunstall (the other side of the world), and Laurie Anderson as well as writers and filmmakers.

All went to ‘investigate climate change’ in the company of scientists, journalists and engineers heading for Disko Bay. The expedition left on September 25th and returned on October 6th . The group visited the Jakobshavn Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the whole of Greenland. Jacobshavn is one of the world’s fastest retreating glaciers due to massive melting.  Every day, the glacier produces 20 million tons of ice that’s breaking away from Greenland. Witnessing that alone was likely worth the trip.

Even if you don’t know many of the artists aboard, the Cape Farewell website provides a very interesting account of the trip.

The point of the trip? To inspire ‘the creative team’ to respond to climate change both in the Arctic and upon their return.

Here is KT Tunstall responding in Greenland:
