I’m not sure if you’ve noticed it or not, but discussing the topic of climate change can bring some pretty “heated” rhetoric (so to speak) in the blogoshere. Each “side” accusing the other of all manner of despicable motivations. Heck, I suppose I’ve gotten caught up in it myself. It’s hard not to when people are spouting off nonsense… oops.
There are many organizations trying to bring cooler heads to the discussion (last time for that pun, I promise), and Climate Central is one of them.
The goals and mission of Climate Central is to “bridge the scientific community and the public”, as expressed on their beta website:
The challenge of global climate change demands the best information possible. In order to make sound decisions, the public and policymakers need objective, understandable, science-based assessments of this challenge and options for addressing it. Climate Central is an accessible one-stop source for timely, relevant, high-quality climate information through a variety of channels, targeting the media and leaders in business, government, and religion. It operates without partisanship, bias, or lobbying.”
The following short videos feature Dr. Heidi Cullen of the Weather Channel and here as a spokeswoman for Climate Central.
The first video discusses, in simple and compelling terms, the basic scientific understanding of climate change and CO2, the second is a brief interview with Tom Brokaw in Montana. Both are a good introduction to the work Climate Central seeks to pursue in the coming months and years as we continue to grapple with the reality of climate change.
