International Red Cross Warns of Climate Change Crisis

Red Cross warns of coming humanitarian disastersThe International Red Cross and Red Crescent is seeking $300 million dollars to help fund expected climate change relief projects in the next two years for those affected by the worst of effects of globla warming.

Red Cross Secretary-General, Markku Niskala, believes that climate change is no longer an “abstract” idea:

There is no doubt in my mind that climate change is one of the greatest threats facing humanity today," Niskala said. "It is fundamentally altering the entire humanitarian agenda and very nature of vulnerability. It is clear then that response alone is no longer enough. The impact of climate change on disasters, on health crises, on vulnerability in general emphasizes the importance of making communities stronger and more resilient in the first place.

In many cases, the most vulnerable countries to the first and worst effects of a warming climate are the least prepared to respond. Niskala talks of the need, therefore, to build strong communities that are better prepared to adapt and withstand the coming changes.
