Sierra Madre’s Bright Idea

Sierra Madre’s Bright Idea

ANNOUNCES:
Its First ever Compact Florescent Light bulb and Light Fixture giveaway. The newly founded grassroots organization will be giving away free CFLs and fixtures in Kersting Court in the center of Sierra Madre (near the intersection of Sierra Madre Blvd. and Baldwin Ave.) on Sat. Sept. 23, 2006 and Sunday Sept. 24, 2006 from 8 am until 3pm (or while supplies last).

The organization was founded to promote the use of Compact Florescent Light bulbs as an alternative to traditional incandescent lights. After seeing Mr. Gore’s film, “An Inconvenient Truth”, Kim Clymer (founder of the organization) left feeling frustrated and helpless….she knew that there were things that she personally could do to help fight Global Warming, but she felt that it would be merely a drop in the bucket and wanted badly to do more…something with a measurable impact.

It was not until she read an article about the impact that using the new florescent bulbs could have on the environment, that an idea came to her. She remembered the film mentioned similar statistics, and they are astounding.

The article she read stated that there are 110,000,000 households in the country and that if each household replaced just one bulb with the new spiral florescents, that enough energy would be saved to power a city of 1.5 million people and the reduction in emissions from power plants would be equivalent to removing 1.3 million cars from the road.
Upon reading that, it became clear to her how she could help to take a major bite out of the problem. She decided that she would make it her mission to get this eye-opening information out to everyone in the country and to make the bulbs available to everyone free of charge. With her own money she purchased almost 400 bulbs and 50 fixtures from her local 99 Cent Only Store. The chain has been selling the bulbs, which are subsidized by SCE, for 2 for 99 cents and the light fixtures for 99 cents each. The organization’s goal is to distribute 110,000,000 light bulbs (or more). Anyone wishing to volunteer their time or services or make a contribution to the organization can contact Sierra Madre’s Bright Idea at 626-827-4132.
