A debate only in his mind

With the deluge of rain along the North American east coast on Monday, President Bush was asked if his views about Global Warming are changing. His reply, apparently, was one of concern about this serious issue, nonetheless claiming that the debate continues whether global warming, and the drastically rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere over just the last few decades, has anything to do with human activity, or if it is just a natural phenomenon. The kind never seen before in the history of the earth – which is anywhere from several billion to a mere six thousand years, depending on your particular outlook toward science; but that’s another story. In any case, one has to ask oneself, “what debate?” “Who is still debating this aspect of climate change?” A good question, and one that ABC’s Bill Blakemore researched in his report from the White House on Monday. It’s really a debate that exists only in the president’s head, and those like him that seem willing not only to ignore, but also attack the overwhelming scientific evidence. Witness Senator Inholf of Oklahoma characterizing the issue of global warming as the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people”; (perhaps he missed the “global” part of global warming, but that isn’t the point right now.) Of course, that was a few years ago. More recently, as in last week, after the report released on global warming from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Inholf discounted the research as “junk science”. I admit I am not aware of the senator’s own scientific training that would lead him to so confidently accuse the work of presumably the nation’s leading authorities on climate change. Or perhaps he has none? So, then, I wonder to whom we should listen. It seems as if the White House may have to be flooded up to the Lincoln bedroom before our fearless government leaders will finally get some common sense knocked into their heads. Of course, by then it’ll be too late…
