Republicans Contribute to Climate Change but Resist Aid for Sandy Relief

Republican deny climate change and deny assistance to those devastated by extreme weatherRepublican resistance to environmental protections and unwavering support for fossil fuels drives climate change, yet they oppose aid to those hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. Conventional wisdom indicates that individual storms cannot be attributed to climate change. However, as explained in a Scientific American article, “that statement does not mean that we cannot say that climate change is making storms bigger….Hurricane Sandy has emboldened more scientists to directly link climate change and storms, without the hedge….Insurers, scientists and journalist are beginning to drop the caveats and simply say that climate change is causing big storms.”

Hurricane Sandy was a monster storm, it devastated the New Jersey shore and parts of the New York City area coastline and left thousands homeless. The superstorm damaged or destroyed more than 72,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey. In New York, more than 300,000 housing units were damaged or destroyed and more than 265,000 businesses were affected.

While some victims of Hurricane Sandy have received partial payments, Many Republicans in the House sought to deny assistance to the people in need. There are currently 140,000 outstanding claims that have yet to be closed.

The sane approach is to develop a policy that strives to stave off the worst impacts of climate change alongside planning for long-term adaptation. However, this entails an understanding informed by climate science and this is one of the things that Republicans seem to adamantly oppose. Read More→

Climate Change, US Debt and Deficits: House Reps Urge Congressional Colleagues to Put a Price on Carbon

Fiscal 2013′s budget battle is now officially under way in Washington D.C., as President Obama submitted the administration’s proposed budget for the coming year. Budgetary debates and controversy were heated enough this past year, all but shutting down the federal government, and they’re sure to get even hotter given this year’s elections.

Congressional representatives on both sides of the aisle in both houses can agree on an urgent need for prudent fiscal discipline at a time when significant financial system and economic risks persist. They differ wildly on the need for counter cyclical economic and fiscal policy, however, as well as how best to guide the US economy forward into the 21st century.

Perhaps nowhere is this political divide as wide or as apparent as it is regarding climate change, environmental and energy policy. Despite the weight of scientific and empirical evidence, Republicans have not only effectively squashed any serious attempt to enact proactive federal climate change and clean energy policies, they continue to push hard to maintain and expand US reliance on fossil fuels.

That’s not to say that proponents have given up on such efforts, however. In fact, climate change and clean energy are likely to be defining and distinguishing issues for Democrats and Republicans as 2012 progresses.

Education Campaign to Combat Climate Change Denial

A national education program is needed to counter the forces of planned ignorance and confusion on climate changeTo help combat American confusion on climate change, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif), sent a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu urging him to launch a national climate change education campaign.

Despite growing scientific evidence and extreme weather, many Americans appear to be very confused about the causes and dangers of climate change.

Henry Waxman, the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, blamed Americans’ climate change confusion on “powerful vested interests in the oil and coal industries successfully fanning disbelief.”

Rather than being driven by science, much of the debate on global warming has been led by ideologically driven deniers who publish pseudo-science or work to undermine competing research. Clearly, the American public needs to have a better grasp of the facts.

“I ask you to investigate the disconnect that appears to be growing between the scientific and the public understanding of climate change,” Rep. Waxman said in his letter to Energy Secretary Chu. “I hope you will then decide to lead a national effort to ensure the public is fully and accurately informed about the science of climate change and its implications for human health and welfare.” Rep. Waxman wrote.

Republican’s Launch a Covert Assault on the Environment

A majority of Americans don't agree with GOP attacks on the EPAEditor’s note: This post originally published in Richard’s blog “The Green Market” and is republished here with his permission

Under the cover of America’s preoccupation with the debt ceiling the Republicans are launching an all out offensive against the Environment. This is the latest attempt by Republicans to slash funding to the EPA and undermine environmental regulations. Cutting funding on environmental issues like air quality and pesticides will prove harmful to Americans and their environment. It will also eliminate jobs and undermine the economy.

“This is the most anti-environmental House in history,” House Energy and Commerce Committee ranking member Henry Waxman told the House. “The new Republican majority seems intent on restoring the robber-baron era where there were no controls on pollution from power plants and oil refineries and factories.”

Republicans want to emasculate the EPA by slashing 18 percent of its budget amounting to $8.65 billion this year and $7.15 billion next year. The bill proposes a budget cut of around seven percent for many other environmentally oriented departments and agencies.

On Monday July 25, the US House of Representatives started work on H.R. 2584, the 2012 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This Environment and Related Agencies appropriations bill funds many of America’s signature environmental laws. This is the first of 12 bills that fund the US federal government, all of which must be passed by the first of October. Read More→

Natural Gas Has a Dirty Secret

One of thousands of natural gas well drilled in Pennsylvania in a single year. Is diesel in the fracking fluid? The Weekly Mulch from the Media Consortium
by Sarah Laskow, Media Consortium blogger

The argument against natural gas got a boost this week, when a congressional investigation turned up evidence that oil and gas companies were using diesel gas to extract gas from the ground.

Natural gas companies have insisted that their newly popular hydraulic fracturing (known as “fracking”) techniques are safe, but as Care2′s Kristina Chew reports, “environmentalists and regulators have become increasingly concerned that the fracking chemicals—including toluene, xylene and benzene, a carcinogen, which are all from diesel gas—are seeping out into underground sources of drinking water, in violation of the Safe Water Drinking Act.”
