Musings of a Malcontent: Harper’s Index – Just The Facts Ma’m

Musings of a Malcontent: Environmental Irony in an Imperfect (but humorous?) World“Musings of a Malcontent” is a weekly op-ed by GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Carlyle Coash

For the last 25 years I have been a faithful reader of the Harper’s Index. It is a section in the beginning of every issue of Harper’s Magazine (not Harper’s Bizarre) that is dedicated to information. It is a list of compiled points of data that are about the obvious and not so obvious.

I love reading it – mostly because it tends to scare the crap out of me.

The best kind of crap-scaring really – if there is such a thing.

There is something about seeing a list of sobering, and at times funny, slivers of choice insights into our world that helps keep my focus on what is most important. Things, after all, are so out of balance right now. Even with the arrival of the Year of the Water Dragon (thank you Chinese and Tibetan Calendar), which portents good fortune and luck, is not enough to sweep away the truth of what we are facing.

So – I thought this week I would share a snippet of what the Index offered for February. The last part should interest you greatly.

Go Earth!

Musings of a Malcontent: Don’t Mess with the Muppets

Musings of a Malcontent: Environmental Irony in an Imperfect (but humorous?) World“Musings of a Malcontent” is a weekly op-ed by GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Carlyle Coash

Is it me or has everyone lost their minds?

About a month ago the Muppets were attacked on Fox News for indoctrinating the young people of this country into “hating corporate America” by promoting a liberal/communist agenda in which these so-called youth are brainwashed with class warfare. They did this apparently in their new movie, The Muppets, where the main villain is an oil tycoon who wants to make more money. By doing this the Muppets are trying to push children away from Capitalism, dare I say the American Dream (which this character Tex Richman embodies), and towards some sort of Pinko Commune where all are equal and there is only the Motherland to embrace us.

Get a freakin’ life people!

Musings of a Malcontent: Burn Baby Burn

Musings of a Malcontent: Environmental Irony in an Imperfect (but humorous?) World“Musings of a Malcontent” is a weekly op-ed by GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Carlyle Coash

Over the last couple of weeks I have come across a series of articles that compels me to ask the question:

Who’s Minding the Store?

There are so many environmental hazards out there and I wonder who really keeps track of them. In the articles I read it seems almost dumb luck that someone took notice and said something or took a photo. I realize that there are a multitude of agencies that try to pay attention to these things. I am also fairly sure that the funds to support them are always at a minimum. We just never want to spend money on things that actually might be good for us in the long run – like enough investigators for the FDA, or Social Workers supporting abused children.

It just makes me scratch my head.

For example – have you heard that a Chevron Drill rig has been on fire off the coast of Nigeria for over a week?

Yeah. On fire.

You can see it burning from space.

Awesome. That stirs some confidence in me right there.

Musings of a Malcontent: Tick Tock Goes the Clock

Musings of a Malcontent: Environmental Irony in an Imperfect (but humorous?) WorldWell it looks like the Doomsday Clock is at it again.

Just when I thought we were safe at 6 minutes to midnight, those pesky cold war nuclear scientists bump it up to five. To be honest, given the number of events just in the last two weeks you would think the clock would be much farther along. An earthquake in Indonesia. Mt Elba erupting (which I think is not a totally unknown occurrence). Flooding and tornadoes in Houston. Massive snowstorms in Alaska.

Those events alone had me shaking my head.

I mean who needs a Doomsday Clock? Just turn on the Weather Channel.

Luckily the movement of the clock is based not so much on natural events as on manmade events – or inaction – to determine its placement over the years. As you might know it was created in 1947 by a group of scientists from the University of Chicago who were involved in the Manhattan Project. The second hand has bounced around a lot over the years as our relationship to Russia and other nuclear-possessing countries waxed and waned, not to mention our inability as a country to sign any meaningful treaty on anti-global bludgeoning. They actually pushed it back a few years ago, as they were feeling hopeful for some reason.

Silly men.

Musings of a Malcontent: Let’s Get This New Year Started Right!

Musings of a Malcontent: Environmental Irony in an Imperfect (but humorous?) World“Musings of a Malcontent” is a weekly op-ed by GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Carlyle Coash

2012

Maybe it’s me, but I was hoping for a better first week of 2012. I know – it’s silly. To have great leaps forward as we began the year is an optimistic attitude to hold. I envisioned great leaders stepping up to pledge the end of hunger, war and suffering on our planet. I dreamed of the major oil companies vowing to truly change their ways, photos of executives out cleaning up the various spills with their own hands. I pictured pollutants being disposed of properly and chemical companies vowing to find better ways to make their products.

So far, well – it could be better.

The headlines have left little for inspiration. Kim Kardashian got a new haircut. Tiger Wood’s ex buys a $12 million dollar mansion and then tears it down. Snooky looses weight and is stunning everyone with her new figure. Twilight: The Musical is opening on Broadway. A fast food restaurant in Belgium is coming out with a Darth Vader Burger – the bun is jet black. (This actually perked my spirits a little). Iran is still threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz. Pre-wedding plastic surgery for brides-to-be is becoming common with thousands of dollars spent on boob jobs and the like.

No wonder the environment gets no respect. With headlines like these it’s hard to get noticed – too much competition from the banal. Plus I keep finding crazy stories of scientists and researchers spending their time on pointless activities. I figured at some point they would get re-focused, but still the madness keeps happening. It is hard to have energy for the big issues when you’re tormenting some small creature to see if it dislikes being impaled. Sure it’s great to know it hates impaling, but we could have guessed that without much effort.
