Earth Hour 2009 – Turn Off Your Lights for One Hour and Vote for the Earth

On Saturday, March 28 at 8:30PM, turn off your lights and vote for the earthTomorrow evening, March 28th, at 8:30PM, is your chance, no matter where you are in the world, to “vote for the Earth” by turning off your lights for one hour (and your television, computer, etc.)

Started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour began when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for one hour. Last year the movement grew, sending a global message of sustainability. Landmarks all over the world including the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness and solidarity for one hour.

This year, the event’s sponsor, WWF, is targeting 1 billion people from across the globe to vote not for business as usual, but for a new way of thinking about the future of the planet and all who call it home. By joining in the act of simply turning off your lights for one hour, we can send a message and cast a vote:

Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. Vote Earth is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to Vote Earth during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.WWF are urging the world to Vote Earth and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.”
